Carnage: Mind Bomb

From the start you know you’re not in for a casual ride. The art is dark, twisted, almost gothic in how it draws Ravencroft and the inside of Carnage’s mind. You see little mouths writhing out of brains, a young Cletus Kasady wielding twin butcher knives with this wild manic grin, tendrils that burrow and twist—scenes that are disturbing, but Ellis doesn’t use them just for shock. They build up an atmosphere of dread, of chaos inside somebody’s head.

Ellis’s writing gives Cletus & Carnage real weight. Before this, Carnage could feel one-dimensional: pure chaos, violence, a villain. Here you get the psychological dive. You see what drives his cruelty, what thoughts bounce around in his skull, all the twisted logic. You see him hurt, but you also see him feel, and that makes it scarier, more human in a sick way. Redemption feels impossible, not because the story says so, but because Ellis builds every panel and every dialogue to push you toward that doubt.

It’s disgusting in parts. Like yeah, sometimes your stomach will churn. But it works. The ugliness isn’t gratuitous, it serves the story. It forces you to look. To understand. And in that ugly mirror there’s something compelling: the horror isn’t just in what Carnage does, but in what he is.

If Carnage is one of your favorite characters this is pretty much a must-read. You’ll walk away shaken. Probably won’t sleep so well. But you’ll also appreciate how Ellis takes a classic Marvel horror icon and peels back the layers until you’re staring straight into the void and somehow, you’re glued to every painful moment.
