The year is 1946. Dr. Lee and his family have just settled into a new home in central Metropolis. His children, Roberta and Tommy, navigate the city’s unfamiliar rhythms, their excitement for their famous neighbor tempered by the difficulty of fitting in. Their struggle is soon eclipsed by a more direct threat. The Ku Klux Klan has marked their house with a burning cross. As fear grips the family, Lois Lane and Clark Kent of the Daily Planet begin investigating the group’s resurgence. When Tommy is taken, a still-developing Superman, who has yet to master flight, must race across the city with Roberta’s help to confront the kidnappers.

This is one of my favourite Superman stories mainly because he doesn't have all his powers yet and his costume is the one from the Fleischer cartoons. A great thing about this story is the use of Superman's identity as an alien being used as an allegory for the immigrant experience. It even explores this with Clark seeing visions of his parents from Krypton whom he initially sees as more alien-like than human. Another thing I always love in Superman stories is his relationship with Lois whether it be that they're already together or if they both have mutual feelings. This is such a great read and if you enjoyed it I suggest you pick up the book, I do have it physically and it such a great read.

absolutely spectacular. i’m no practiced comic critic like Drake, Sasha or Lewis, but the narrative in my opinion is well structured and paced, and the real shine of this book is the characterization; Lan-Shin/Roberta is the purest bean, and Chuck’s slow-burn redemption is brilliant. and the best i can say about the book, as someone who grew up on the Timmverse animated series, is that every line of Clark’s dialogue i could practically hear Tim Daly’s voice in the back of my mind. i wasn’t super fond of the artwork at first, but it did start to grow on me around the start of the second issue, especially seeing the deep-cut of Jor-El and Lara-El’s old Silver Age threads.

A really fun superman story which is a nice introduction & example of Superman's feeling of being from another world. This compliments the other protagonist of Roberta and her story. This shows Superman at his truest– standing up for those in need and bringing hope in their darkest hour. The art by Gurihiru is great as always! I have nothing but praise for this 9/10
