Loki Laufeyson, known as the God of Mischief, is a prominent character in Marvel Comics. First appearing in "Journey into Mystery" #85, he was re-imagined by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby from his mythological roots as a Norse deity. Loki is the adopted son of Odin, the All-Father of Asgard, and the arch-nemesis of his brother Thor. Raised in the shadow of the favored heir, Loki's complex relationship with Thor and desire for power define his role within the Marvel Universe.
Born to the Frost Giant King Laufey, Loki was adopted by Odin after his father's defeat. This adoption fulfilled a prophecy that foretold Loki's influence on Asgard's fate. Loki's motivations are deeply rooted in his jealousy of Thor and a desire to prove himself superior. This drive often leads him to schemes that threaten Asgard and Earth alike. He is infamous for his attempts to seize the throne of Asgard, often clashing with Thor and the Avengers. Loki's actions have labeled him a public enemy, forcing Odin to intervene on multiple occasions. One of his early punishments was confinement within a tree, a testament to his persistent defiance.
Major Incarnations and Story Arcs
Throughout his appearances, Loki's character has undergone significant transformations. Notably, he once assumed the identity of Kid Loki, a younger, reincarnated version free from the burden of past misdeeds. This incarnation first appeared in "Thor" #617, showcasing a more innocent side until his memories were restored. Another significant transformation occurred when Loki took on the guise of the Scarlet Witch, demonstrating his shape-shifting abilities and willingness to exploit others' identities for his purposes.
Loki's alliances often include some of Asgard's most malevolent figures, such as the fire demon Surtur and the sorcerer Eldred. His pursuit of power led him to betray Eldred, offering his soul to Surtur in exchange for greater magical abilities. Through trickery, he married Sigyn, originally engaged to another, and with Angerboda, fathered monstrous offspring like the Midgard Serpent and Fenris Wolf.
