Whirlwind, real name David Cannon, is a villain in the Marvel Comics universe. First appearing as the Human Top in "Tales to Astonish" #50 (1963), he was created by the legendary duo Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Cannon is known for his high-speed abilities and has been a persistent adversary to Hank Pym (Giant Man) and the Avengers.

David Cannon discovered his superhuman ability to move at extraordinary speeds at a young age. Cannon's character evolved significantly over the years. In the Bronze Age of comics, he adopted the moniker Whirlwind, refining his look and abilities. This period marked his transition from a solo operative to a more complex villain as he became involved with the Masters of Evil. Despite his personal vendettas, Cannon struggled with teamwork, often undermining group efforts with his arrogance and obsession with the Wasp. His tenure with the Masters of Evil featured noteworthy battles against the Avengers, despite often ending in failure.

Whirlwind's alter ego, Charles Matthews, saw him attempting to manipulate Janet Van Dyne while maintaining his criminal activities. In an alternate universe, Cannon's counterpart, known as Ill Wind, appeared in the Avataars continuity, showcasing a different facet of his character. Another alias he used was Victor Shade, although this is less prominent in his primary narrative.
