Katana is the vigilante identity of Tatsu Yamashiro, a character from DC Comics. She first appeared in "The Brave and The Bold" #200, created by Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo. Katana is a skilled martial artist and swordswoman, driven by a tragic past and a quest for vengeance. Her defining weapon is the mystical sword known as the Soultaker, which holds the captured souls of those it has slain, including her deceased husband, Maseo.
Tatsu Yamashiro's life changed dramatically after her family was destroyed by her brother-in-law, Takeo Yamashiro, who was consumed by jealousy and aligned himself with the Yakuza. Following the deaths of her husband and children in a fire instigated by Takeo, Tatsu took up the mantle of Katana, dedicating her life to justice and ensuring others do not suffer her fate.

The Soultaker sword grants her additional abilities, including necromancy and communication with the spirits trapped within, providing her both guidance and haunting reminders of her past.

Katana's character has evolved across various DC Comics continuities. In the Modern Age, she joined the Outsiders, which marked a significant period in her development. Initially cold and bitter due to her family's tragic demise, she softened through her friendship with Halo, assuming a protective, maternal role. Her character continued to explore themes of loss and redemption, especially when confronted by her resurrected family during the Blackest Night event.
In the New 52 reboot, Katana became a member of the Birds of Prey and later the Justice League of America, illustrating her expanding role within the DC Universe. This period introduced a new armored appearance and emphasized her ruthless nature in combat. Despite her hardened demeanor, she maintained close ties with team members like Black Canary and often consulted the Soultaker for strategic insights.
Katana also headlined her own solo series during the New 52 era, though it was short-lived, lasting only ten issues. This series further explored her complex relationship with the Soultaker and her ongoing struggle with her past.
