Carnage, a Marvel Comics character, is the terrifying result of a symbiotic bond with Cletus Kasady, an already unstable serial killer. Created by David Michelinie and Mark Bagley, Carnage first appeared in a cameo in "Amazing Spider-Man" #360 (1992) and fully in issue #361 the same year. This character, unlike its predecessor Venom, represents a fusion so complete that Kasady and the symbiote operate as a singular entity, amplifying Kasady's innate bloodlust and desire for chaos.
The Carnage symbiote was born from Venom, reproducing asexually and bonding with Kasady after entering his bloodstream through a cut. This unique connection allows Carnage to refer to himself as "I" rather than "we," indicating a complete merger rather than a partnership. The symbiote's red coloration comes from its bond with Kasady’s blood, making him even more formidable due to his inherent insanity.

Carnage possesses a vast array of powers: superhuman strength, speed, and agility, along with abilities like shape-shifting, elasticity, and limited invisibility. Unlike many symbiotes, Carnage can merge with his host so thoroughly that he can manipulate his form at will, including forming weapons with his limbs. This, coupled with his psychic abilities and regenerative healing, makes him a lethal adversary to Spider-Man and others in the Marvel universe.
Major Incarnations
Throughout his comic history, Carnage has bonded with various hosts, occasionally spreading his influence beyond Cletus Kasady. Notable alternate versions include "Spider-Carnage," where Peter Parker temporarily hosts the symbiote, and "Carnage Cosmic," when the symbiote bonds with Norrin Radd, the Silver Surfer, drastically amplifying its power.
One of Carnage's most infamous storylines is "Maximum Carnage," where he escapes captivity and teams up with Shriek and other villains to wreak havoc across New York City. This storyline sees Carnage assembling a "family" of chaotic villains, escalating his threat level beyond mere murder to city-wide devastation. The arc showcases Carnage's ability to manipulate and lead other villains, highlighting his influence and the symbiote's capacity for spreading chaos.
Carnage's conflict with Spider-Man often draws in other major players, such as Venom, who has occasionally allied with Spider-Man to contain Carnage's rampages.
