Noriko Ashida, known by her codename Surge, is a mutant character in the Marvel Comics universe. She first appeared in "New Mutants Vol. 2 #8" in 2004, created by Nunzio DeFilippis, Christina Weir, and Keron Grant. A central figure among the younger generation of mutants, Surge is a prominent member and occasional leader of the New X-Men.
Born in Tokyo, Japan, Noriko manifested her powers at a young age, which led to her running away from home due to her father's traditional views and rejection of mutants. She eventually made her way to the U.S., living on the streets near the Xavier Institute until her powers became dangerously uncontrollable. Surge possesses the ability to absorb ambient electrical energy, which she can then release in powerful bursts or channel into super-speed, heightened agility, and stamina. Her powers also enable her to disrupt electronic devices. Initially, her lack of control over these abilities meant she relied on drugs to suppress their effects until she received her gauntlets.
Nori's leadership qualities emerged over time, despite her initial reluctance to take on such a role. Her strong-willed and rebellious nature often put her at odds with authority figures, including her superiors at the Xavier Institute.
